ASU opens Pac-12 play with series win over UCLA

The second-ranked Arizona State softball team kicked off their Pac-12 schedule by winning two out of three games against No. 12 UCLA.

On Friday night’s game, the Bruins outscored the Sun Devils 3-2. Sun Devil pitcher Dallas Escobedo was credited with a loss making her 15-3.

A homerun in the bottom of the sixth by UCLA outfielder B.B. Bates eventually led to the Bruin’s win over the Sun Devils.

Arizona State bounced back on Saturday, beating the Bruins 10-3. Pitcher Mackenzie Popescue picked up her first win against a ranked opponent and improved her record to 14-0.

The game was scoreless up until the third inning when the Sun Devil offense exploded. They scored four runs in the third inning and didn’t have another scoreless inning the rest of the game.

Sun Devil catcher Amber Freeman also hit her ninth homerun of the season in the game.

On Sunday, Arizona State came out on top with a 5-4 win. Escobedo earned her first Pac-12 win of the season, pitching five complete innings during the game. She is now 16-3. Popescue also earned her first career save when she came in during the bottom of the sixth.

First baseman Nikki Girard hit her third homerun of the season helping the Sun Devils earn their 31st win of the season.
