Full team effort as Sun Devils down Redhawks 90-54

The Sun Devils had another slow start in Tempe tonight against the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks, putting up only seven points in the first five minutes. However they finally turned on the heat with 13:53 left in the half when Jermaine Marshall sank a jumper ending what was Miami’s only lead in the first half.

Jermaine Marshall showed his hustle and led the Sun Devil pack in the first half with a total of 12 points.

“It was great to be able to shoot the ball that well, ” Marshall said. “I just try to keep working hard so I just keep listening to everybody and on top of that just staying in the gym. I really try to thrive on playing the full-length of the floor and I really try to play on both ends.”

Despite the six turnovers by the Sun Devils in the first half, they overcame whatever damage that may have caused by soaring above the Redhawks’ heads to out rebound the team from Oxford 26-12.

The Sun Devils widened the gap with a 17-4 run over the next six minutes. At the end of the first half, ASU created a 25-5 run over the last 11 minutes and 20 seconds. The Sun Devils led the Redhawks by a staggering 23 points with a score of 41-18 at the end of the half.

After the half, another four some minutes expired before the Sun Devils ignited another 13-2 run.

Both teams went back and forth until the end of the game, but the Redhawks could not manage to dig their way out of a continuing 30-40 point deficit. ASU defeated Miami 90-54. Yet another game won in blowout-fashion.

Reggie Johnson was a bright spot for the Redhawks, he led the team in a losing effort with a total of 24 points.

Jahii Carson and Marshall both scored 18 total points. Carson also led the team with 8 assists. Also in double figures was Calean Robinson with 11 points, three from behind the arc.

Jordan Bachynski impressed again, with another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

“That’s my number one goal right now is rebounds. That’s what can help our team by getting those 50/50 balls. I try to attack the rim as hard as I can. That was definitely a goal to just attack the rim and be aggressive inside,” Bachynski said.

Sendek was pleased with Bachynski’s performance but expressed his opinion that, “Although tonight he had ten in only 23 minutes, I still think he has the capacity to get even more offensive rebounds.”

The Sun Devils improve to 2-0 on the season and will face Idaho State Friday night.

“Going into the game we were really on edge defending the three point line, but we defended it pretty well. Also, we had 26 assists on 39 field goals and that’s really encouraging,” Sendek said.
