Five Sun Devils took home first place at the Cowboy Open in Laramie, Wyo., on Saturday.
The first final, the 125lb weight class, saw redshirt junior Brandon Courtney take home the victory for the Sun Devils over Western Wyoming University’s Garrett Ricks. Courtney held the lead steadily throughout the match, which ended in a 9-4 victory for the junior.
In the 149lb weight class, redshirt freshman Kyle Parco balled out for the Sun Devils. Parco defeated Wyoming’s Jaron Jensen 9-3 in a bout which Jensen failed to gain momentum in during the match.
The Valencia brothers came out of Laramie victorious with fifth-year senior Anthony Valencia winning the 165lb weight class, and true freshman Cael Valencia won the final against Wyoming’s Hayden Hastings 3-2 in the 174lb weight class.
The meet ended with the heavyweights, and it was none other than the Sun Devils’ redshirt freshman Cohlton Schultz defeating Wyoming’s Brian Andrews 6-1.
Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week Michael McGee was the sole Sun Devil to fall short in a final of his weight class. The redshirt junior lost a tough battle against Wyoming’s Job Greenwood 8-7 in the 133lb matchup.
The Sun Devils are currently ranked No.7 in the NCAA, and look to continue their dominance next month at the Dual Nationals in Fort Walton Beach, Flor., on Dec. 20-21. The Sun Devils will return home on Jan. 9, when they will take on Big Ten opponent Iowa State at Desert Financial Arena.
