Even though Arizona State got shut out by Colorado with a score of 3-0, the night was more of a celebration of the two graduating seniors.
This weekend was the last time that defenseman Molly Potter and goaltender Jordan Nash-Boulden got to compete on home ice.
“Obviously I would’ve loved to win,” said Potter. “The effort that everybody gave was all I could’ve asked for.”
After taking only 15 shots on net during Friday night’s game, the Sun Devils were able to put up 42 shots against the Buffaloes Saturday night. Colorado’s Lexi Hartman recorded her sixth shutout of the season.
Nash-Boulden stopped 45 of Colorado’s 48 shots on goal. The Buffaloes three goals came from Sara McNamara, Maya Nefs, and Mariah Dally.
When letting in a few goals, it can be tricky for goalies to keep their head in the game.
“It is one save at a time,” Nash-Boulden said. “Once it gets by you, there’s nothing you can do about it. You just have to hit the reset button and go out there and get the next one.”
Despite a loss, Potter was able to reflect on the past four seasons with her teammate.
“From day one I connected with Jordan,” said Potter. “That goalie-defense relationship really helps. I know she always has my back and through the years she knows I always have hers. In this fourth year we’ve gotten even closer with us both leaving.”
Nash-Boulden described all of the things that she was able to learn throughout the years from Potter.
“Molly really is just a once-in-a-career kind of player,” Nash-Boulden said. “You always want somebody like that standing in front of you and holding down the fort. She’s been amazing on the ice for us and off the ice she’s just such a great friend and a good teammate… She’s certainly left her mark on the program no matter what.”
The home games may be complete, but the Sun Devils still have one more series before heading to Salt Lake City, Utah for the WWCHL playoffs.
Next Saturday, ASU will travel to AZ Ice Arcadia to face Grand Canyon University. The Sun Devils have defeated the Antelopes in all four games that they have met this season.
Potter feels confident that next weekend will be no different and that they can pull off another win.
“If we bring this much effort against GCU, there’s no competition,” said Potter.
