ASU Women’s Basketball: Sun Devils get handed tough loss by Stanford

The No. 10 Stanford Cardinals swept No. 18 Arizona State as the Sun Devils lost their second conference game to the Cardinal 56-66.

ASU struggled to begin the game as they only made three of 16 shots in the first quarter while giving up 14 points to Stanford. ASU got them into an early hole, which only got bigger into the second half. Stanford led the entire game and ASU couldn’t catch up.

Stanford’s Erica McCall had a great game scoring 18 points on just 6-10 shooting. The Cardinals also had a good output from McPhee, who scored 13 points, and Karlie Samuelson who added 15.

Stanford’s defense was just too much for the Sun Devils. ASU had trouble getting into the paint, finding open shots and having good attempts before it was too late on the shot clock. On top of that, Stanford forced 12 turnovers and had 3 blocks.

ASU also got out rebounded 37-29, which makes it hard to keep up when you’re only shooting 30-percent from the field.

However, Sophie Brunner did have a good game scoring 21 points and shooting 70-percent from the field. Quinn Dornstrauder also contributed by grabbing nine rebounds and 14 points, as she barely missed out on a double-double. Nevertheless, the team will need more of its players to step up if they want to succeed in the rest of Pac-12 play.

ASU looks to bounce back as they continue their road trip with another tough game against No. 13 UCLA on Friday, January 27 at 4:00 p.m. in Los Angeles.
