Arizona State volleyball travelled to Corvallis for their first and final match of the season against Oregon State. Both teams came into the match behind losing streaks; three games for the Sun Devils and five for the Beavers.
Arizona State dropped the match in four sets (18-25, 25-19, 17-25, 17-25).
The Beavers got off to a 4-0 scoring run to give them a quick 5-2 lead in the first set. Senior Maddie Goings showed off the big right hand and contributed two early kills. The Sun Devils would eventually tie it at 12 after the two teams traded rallies.
Arizona State continued struggling on its serves, registering two service errors going into the first timeout, down 15-13. Goings had four early kills for the Beavers and capped off 3-0 scoring run with a service ace leading to a timeout by the Sun Devils. The Beavers would take set one, 25-18.
Arizona State bounced back in the second set taking a 5-0 lead at the start. A collective effort for the Sun Devils saw four kills from different players. Oregon State was able to go on multiple scoring runs and cut the deficit to one. Arizona State however added on with two more points before the media timeout up 15-12. Goings and the Beavers came out of the media timeout on a 4-0 scoring run to retake the lead. Arizona State would respond with a 3-0 scoring run eventually leading to an Oregon State timeout.
Kills by junior Iman Isanovic and sophomore Roberta Rabelo would add on to the Sun Devils lead. The Sun Devils would go on to win the set 25-19 and tie the match at one a piece. Isanovic led the Sun Devils with nine kills. Goings led the Beavers with 11 kills.
Oregon State was aggressively attacking the nets to start the third set and rode that momentum to a 4-0 scoring run and 6-2 lead. Arizona State answered with their own 4-0 scoring run with two kills from sophomore Marta Levinska. Goings had continued success throughout the set, adding four kills before a timeout by head coach Sanja Tomasevic with the Sun Devils trailing 13-9. Goings had a double double already halfway through the third set with 15 kills and 13 digs.
Tomasevic would call her second timeout of the set with the Sun Devils still trailing, 17-12. Oregon State would go up two sets to one with a 25-17 set win.
Isanovic and Levinska had 11 kills each heading into the fourth set, while Goings was leading the Beavers with 16 kills. The Sun Devils were hitting .138 compared to .175 from the Beavers.
The fourth set saw the two teams going back-and-forth with six ties and a 6-6 set. The Sun Devils offense stalled with two service errors adding to their match total of six service errors. An unsuccessful challenge by Tomasevic, Arizona State trailed, 15-11. The Beavers would then go on a 4-0 scoring run looking to close the match with a 18-11 lead and forcing a final timeout from the Sun Devils. The Beavers added two more before the Sun Devils could end a 6-0 scoring run. The Sun Devils dropped the fourth set, 25-17 and lost the match with the seventh service error of the match.
Isanovic finished the match leading the Sun Devils in kills with 14 and nine digs. Levinska finished behind Isanovic with 13 kills and nine digs.
Goings powered the Beavers past the Sun Devils with 21 kills and .320 hitting percentage to go along with 25 digs.
Arizona State will travel to Tucson on Saturday for their final matchup with the Arizona Wildcats. The match will begin at 12 p.m. MST.
