Sun Devils hockey dominated the sixth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners 6-1 on Friday night. Six different Sun Devils found the goal column.
Dan Styrna started the offense for the maroon and gold with a nice feed from captain Colin Hekle. Styrna’s goal was his second of the weekend and Hekle’s assist increases his point streak to 17 games this season.
With a tight 1-0 game on the road after the first 20 minutes of play, the Sun Devils were preparing to pad their lead in the second. Typically, the second period has been a struggle for ASU’s offense. Not tonight.
Kale Dolinski, Colin Hekle, Ben Findlay and Stephen Collins were the four goal scorers in the second period. Oklahoma goaltender Colin Fernandes did not stand a chance against ASU’s powerful offense. On Thursday night, Fernandes lost a 3-1 decision to Arizona and for the second night in a row, the Sooners offense was nonexistent.
Sophomore Faiz Khan scored his fifth goal of the season to put the Sun Devils up by a touchdown, but Oklahoma would add one goal with 46 seconds left to break up goaltender Joe D’Elia’s potential back-to-back shutouts.
Arizona State improves to 17-0-0 on the season with the win. They face Oklahoma for game two of the series on Saturday night at 4 p.m.
