ASU Football: Quarterback Trenton Bourguet undergoes foot surgery

A source close to Arizona State Football redshirt junior quarterback Trenton Bourguet told the Walter Cronkite Sports Network that the QB had surgery on Tuesday to repair a fractured fifth metatarsal bone in his foot.

The injury occurred last August, but Bourguet played through the injury during the 2021 season. The source said that the injury healed over the course of the season. However, Bourguet re-injured it during “the second week of” ASU’s spring practices, the source told WCSN.

Surgery was always planned for Bourguet, and, per the source, Bourgeut will not miss any football and will be back in four-to-six weeks.

“Trenton will come back stronger than he was before,” the source  said. “He is a tough kid.”

During spring practices, Bourguet could be seen leading quarterbacks through drills and practiced with both the first- and second-teams. He earned 16 snaps during the Spring Showcase.

ASU’s quarterback competition is still seemingly wide open at the terminus of spring ball. While a lack of size may keep Bourguet in the back seat of the race, his high football I.Q. and an openness from ASU coaches may change that.

“There’s a bunch of guys in the NFL that have broken that mold through recent years,” ASU offensive coordinator Glenn Thomas explained about size in a quarterback on March 17. “So, at the end of the day, it comes down to production and efficiency. At the end of the day, that’s what makes the difference.”
