Sun Devils sink Red Raiders

The Sun Devils were able to take care of business in their first true road game of the season, defeating the Texas Tech Red Raiders 77-62.

The key factor in the game was the three ball, as Arizona State (10-2) hit 14 three-pointers while Texas Tech (5-4) went 3-13 from behind the arc.

Jonathan Gilling and Jahii Carson both had 18 points for the Sun Devils. Gilling hit a career high six three-pointers, and Carson went on a late scoring barrage to guarantee the win.

The game was tied 10-10 early, before ASU went on a 17-2 run that was fueled by three pointers. Gilling and guard Evan Gordon combined for five three-pointers in a five-minute span to give ASU a 27-12 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half. The Red Raiders were then able to get things going offensively and closed out the half on a 24-15 run. ASU led the game 42-36 at half.

Early in the second half, Texas Tech chipped away at the lead to make it a 42-38 game. The Sun Devils then suffered two big blows after center Jordan Bachynski injured his ankle and left the game, and Carrick Felix went to the bench with four fouls. However, Texas Tech was never able take control of the game. Back-up guard Chris Colvin, and reserve center Ruslan Pateev contributed 12 points off the bench to maintain the lead for the Sun Devils. Carson then secured the victory with 12 points in the final six minutes.

Red Raider forward Jaye Crockett led Texas Tech with 11 points and eight rebounds.

ASU will return to action on December 29th as they host Coppin State (3-10).
