The Sun Devil women’s soccer team took care of business in their season opener as they beat Cal State Northridge 2-0.

As expected, sophomore forward Cali Farquharson delivered by scoring the team’s first goal in the 28th minute. Farquharson received the ball from Jessica Domenichelli, and sent it past Northridge goal keeper Rebecca Harper.

“I tried to stay calm. I took a touch, because I think [Harper] thought I was going to take the shot on my first try. I tried to place it but it ended up going right under the goalie, so I’m thankful for that,” Farquharson said. “It gives me a lot of confidence.”

Head coach Kevin Boyd said he was pleased by his team’s defense.

“[Our defense] got a clean sheet. We kept them out, and there is a lot to be said for that,” Boyd said.

Forward Sarah Tosti capped off the second half with a goal in the 64th minute. Tosti said she thinks there is still room for improvement on offense.

“We need to keep attacking the goal more… I just think we need to keep working on getting away from the [opposing] players, and making the ball work for us so it will go in our favor,” Tosti said

The Matadors had a couple of chances late in the second half but were unable to get a finishing touch.

Next, the Sun Devils will travel to take on No. 12 Texas A&M on Aug. 30.

“They’ll be good. I’m all for testing ourselves against a top team,” Boyd said.
