The Arizona State soccer team closed out the Cats’ Classic in Tucson with a 4-0 win over Southern Utah.
The Sun Devils were helped by forward Cali Farquharson’s two-goal performance, and a dominant possession game which quieted Southern Utah’s offense. Farquharson now has nine goals on the season.
Farquharson started the scoring in the 13th minute when forward Devin Marshall sent her through on a one-on-one with the opposing keeper Elyssa Hashimoto. Farquharson did the rest, calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net.
Sun Devil midfielder Holland Crook scored the second goal in the 30th minute on a penalty kick. She sent the goalkeeper the wrong way as she scored from the spot hitting the keeper’s lower right hand corner. This was Crook’s first goal of the season.
In the second half, there were many chances for the Sun Devil’s offense to add to their lead. In the 56th minute, Crook sent Farquharson on a one on one with the keeper, but she dragged the shot wide. Moments later, Farquharson had another chance but only managed to hit a weak shot straight at the keeper.
In the 63rd minute, forward Sara Tosti was substituted in for Marshall. It was in the 69th minute that Tosti scored the Sun Devil’s third goal, and first of the second half. She caught the keeper out of position, and lobbed it over her. That was Tosti’s second goal of the season.
Farquharson got her second goal in the 77th minute. Dribbling up the field, she took a shot just outside of the 18 yard box. She nailed the keeper’s lower right hand corner and Farquharson was able to extend the Sun Devil’s lead to 4-0.
Sun Devil goalkeepers Chandler Morris and Liz Schulze combined for the clean sheet.
Arizona State will host Boise State next on Friday at 4:30 pm.
