Arizona State rolls to mercy-rule win in second game of doubleheader

Entering today’s doubleheader against No. 14 Stanford, second ranked Arizona State was first in the nation with 7.76 runs per game. After defeating the Cardinal in the first game this morning, 12-6, the Sun Devils reached double digits again in the second game as Amber Freeman led the way in a 11-2 six-inning mercy rule victory in Palo Alto.

Freeman got ASU on the board in the first inning with a solo shot and then added a three-run homerun to centerfield in her second at-bat. She finished the night 3 for 4 with two home runs and five RBIs.

Lucy Aubrecht added a homerun of her own, as well as three RBIs, and the Sun Devils scored five runs in the sixth inning that led to the mercy rule win.

After being pulled in the first game after three innings, starting pitcher Mackenzie Popescue pitched all six innings in this one, allowing only four hits and two runs. It was her 16th victory of the year.

The Sun Devils return to action tomorrow as they look to sweep the Cardinal in the series finale. First pitch scheduled for noon.
