Midfielder Martynec announces he’s transferring

Early last week Arizona State midfielder Ben Martynec announced via Facebook that he would be transferring from ASU.

Last year Martynec was hurt during the Chapman game on Mar. 1 and did not return to the playing field until the postseason opener against Loyola Marymount.

“After two great years doing my thing at ASU, undergoing emotional and physical injuries, it is time I come home,” Martynec said in a Facebook post. “I’m sad to think about all the people I’m leaving behind, but am excited for the opportunities yet to come.”

Martynec’s transfer destination has not yet been confirmed, but it appears that he will be returning to his home state of Minnesota to attend St. John’s University. There is still no word on whether or not he will attempt to continue his lacrosse career.

In 2012, his freshman year for the Sun Devils, Martynec recorded 28 points (14 goals, 14 assists) for the team.

After suffering a fractured rib in the Chapman game this past season, Martynec finished the season with six points.

The loss of the junior midfielder will lead to some speculation to who can fill the shoes he’ll be leaving behind. His injury last year opened the door to develop younger midfielders, most notably Adam Beauchamp.

ASU head coach Chris Malone will need to address two losses at the position now, as the team also lost Zach Scarano to graduation.

Malone could not be reached for comment on the Martynec transfer.
