Quinn still adjusting on attack

The newest addition to the ASU attack unit is still transitioning into his new role despite a 5-goal performance in the season opener.

Senior Logan Quinn said he is trying to take this hard transition in strides, but he is glad he is on the field for more time. The difference is that there is a lot different dodging behind the cage because “you don’t get to look at the goal when setting yourself up for a shot,” according to Quinn. The difference was difficult for him when he first moved to attack.

“So the first practice that I was out on the field, my footwork was a bit clumsy because I wasn’t used to the dodges. So actually the first dodge that I took I slipped trying to cut out for a question mark dodge, and I fell on my butt. I got the coach to laugh pretty hard,” Quinn said.

Quinn is replacing the now-graduated Payson Clark, who also moved from midfield to attack his senior year.

Junior attackman Dan Davis said ASU had “arguably some of the best chemistry of any attack unit last year,” which resulted in 216 points between the three attackers. Davis and senior attacker Justin Straker wanted someone who had a lot of offensive experience and similar skill levels to fill the remaining spot, according to Davis.

Quinn had 59 points with 36 assists last season. Last year he was mostly feeding the attack, but now they’re all trying to set each other up, especially with the two-man game behind the goal.

“With him moving to attack, it changes the style of play. To have all upperclassmen, with Logan, myself and Dan at attack, just all that experience…we have it. We just have to build that chemistry,” Straker said. “It’s getting there, but it just takes time.”

“It’s easy to build chemistry quickly with guys you like to be around,” Quinn said.

Quinn will next play in his new role on Friday, Feb. 21, in ASU’s home opener against Minnesota-Duluth. You can watch that game live at WCSN’s live broadcast page.
