True freshman Jaden Rashada will start at quarterback for Arizona State Football’s season opener, according to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro. The Sun Devils begin their season by hosting Southern Utah on August 31.
Rashada beat out redshirt junior Trenton Bourguet and redshirt sophomore Drew Pyne – a transfer from Notre Dame who sustained a hamstring injury earlier this month – for the job.
Rashada, a four-star prospect and top-15 quarterback out of Pittsburg, California, earned the nod after putting together a strong performance during fall camp. He is the first true freshman to start under center for the Sun Devils in a season opener since Jayden Daniels did in 2019.
The 6-foot-4-inch quarterback was previously committed to Florida before making his way to ASU.
During his senior season at Pittsburg High School, the dual-threat signal caller played in 14 games and threw for 3,055 yards, 32 passing touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Rashada also logged 419 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
Rashada is the son of former Sun Devils’ safety Harlan Rashada, who played in Tempe for three seasons from 1992-94. Jaden’s brother, redshirt junior defensive back Roman Rashada, is also on the team after transferring from Diablo Valley College.
