The Arizona State women’s basketball team started off a four-game road series with two consecutive losses.
ASU fell 57-43 to Colorado on Friday and then ended the weekend with a 66-46 loss to Utah on Sunday.
During the game against CU, the first half consisted of both teams going back and forth with many lead changes. However, back-to-back three-pointers by Jada Blackwell and Haley Videckis gave the Devils a 26-22 lead at halftime.
When action resumed in the second half, ASU began to struggle. CU went on a 13-0 run midway through the half that gave them a 44-32 lead. The Devils finally ended the spurt when Promise Amukamara made a layup with 8:24 left in the game. However, ASU’s poor shooting kept them from making a comeback. The Lady Devils shot only 13.3 percent from the field compared to the Buffaloes 47 percent in the second half.
Videckis led ASU in scoring with 11 points followed by Arnecia Hawkins with eight. CU’s stand-out guard Chucky Jeffery led all scorers with 19 points. The Devils were also outrebounded by the Buffaloes 47-31, which contributed to the loss.
Looking to turn things around against Utah, ASU started strong and led by seven at one point during the first half. However, the Utes came back and led 29-24 at halftime and it only got worse for the maroon and gold.
The second half of the game against Utah was similar to the one against Colorado. Again, the Devils struggled to score and shot only 29.2 percent compared to the Utes 63.2 percent. Along with poor shooting, the Lady Devils were outrebounded again. ASU only grabbed 25 rebounds in the game compared to Utah’s 33.
Joy Burke led the Devils in scoring on Sunday with ten points, followed by Promise Amukamara with eight. The Utes were led by Michelle Plouffe with 18 points.
The Lady Devils hope to make-up for these two losses when they travel to Los Angeles this weekend to play USC and UCLA. Tip-off for Friday’s game against the Trojans is at 7 p.m.
