Players to watch in Coca Cola Classic

“WCSN analysts Ryan Hill and Greg Cameron debate which pitcher is the better MLB prospect – ASU’s Trevor Williams or Arkansas’s Ryna Stanek?”

Baseball scouts and fans go out to major college tournaments to see players who have a chance to compete at the next level.. This weekend is no different as there are many players to watch in the Coca Cola Classic.

All four teams, especially Arizona State and Arkansas, have great arms in their pitching staffs. There is one guy in particular that I want fans to keep an eye on.

Arkansas relief pitcher Colby Suggs is one of the best relief pitchers in college baseball.  The six foot, 225 pound pitcher has done well out of the pen for the Razorbacks and took advantage of his summer in the Cape Cod League.

Suggs has pitched 59 innings and has a career ERA of 1.22. The junior held opposing batters to a .171 batting average through two years in the Razorbacks pen. The Cape Cod League is college baseball’s most prestigious summer baseball league and Suggs did not miss the opportunity.

He was known for being a little wild in the past with 36 walks at Arkansas, but he showed command this summer with just eight free passes in his 19.2 innings of relief. He struck out 30 in the Cape and it sent his name flying up draft boards. The Texas native has been projected to go within the first or second round of the upcoming Major League Baseball draft.

Suggs’ height should not be a concern to scouts because he has a thick lower half that always him to be a power reliever in future years. He has gotten off to rocky start to the 2013 season, however, with five walks in just an inning and a third. Suggs and the Razorbacks will continue their dominance in the SEC and will more than likely make it to Omaha this year. Look for the Arkansas reliever to have a big weekend and year.
