Williams’ complete game lifts ASU over Pacific

ASU defeated Pacific 8-1 behind a complete game from Trevor Williams on Friday in its second game of the Coca-Cola Classic. This win gave Tim Esmay his 350th career win as a head coach.

Williams struck out nine, walked none, and gave up five hits in his nine innings of work. It was his first complete game of the season. Williams improved to 2-0 on the season, showing why he was a preseason All-American.

So far this season, Williams has pitched 21 innings, striking out 21 batters while only walking three. He has a 1.29 ERA and has only allowed 12 hits in his three starts.

The Sun Devils brought their bats today as five different players recorded RBIs and nine recorded hits. Second baseman James McDonald knocked in his team-leading 10th RBI of the season in the fourth inning. McDonald, along with Rossiter and Coffman, have reached base safely in eight consecutive games.

David Graybill recorded three RBIs, Drew Stankiewicz recorded two, and Kasey Coffman and Jake Peevyhouse each recorded one.

Michael Benjamin had two doubles and redshirt junior Kyle Bilbrey got his first career hit and scored his first career run.

ASU scored early and often.  The Sun Devils scored five runs in a monster fourth inning that forced Pacific starter John Haberman to come out in favor of Mike Hagel, who finished the game.

While Haberman struck out none and gave up eight hits and seven runs in three innings, Hager struck out four and gave up six hits and one run in his five innings of work.

Esmay won his 137th game at the helm for ASU, and now has 350 career wins as a head coach.

The Sun Devils take on Arkansas on Saturday with Ryan Kellogg on the mound, and finish the Coca-Cola Classic Sunday against Gonzaga behind Adam McCreery.
