ASU Wrestling: Sun Devils begin regular season in Dakota states this weekend

After a stellar 2017-2018 campaign, the No. 5 ranked Arizona State University Wrestling team will look to get the 2018-2019 season off to a hot start up in the Dakota states with several high-leverage match-ups to open the season.

On Saturday, Nov. 10, ASU will participate in 48th annual Bison Open tournament hosted by North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. ASU will likely have all 10 starters participate as scorers.

Many second-string wrestlers will travel with the team and participate in the Bison Open but wrestle under the unattached tag and unable to contribute to the team scoring.

After finishing the Bison Open in Fargo, ND, the Sun Devils will then travel south down I-29 into Brookings, South Dakota, where it will match up against No. 18 ranked South Dakota State Sunday afternoon.

Both ASU and SDSU finished well at the 2018 NCAA D-I National championships, placing 10th and 12th respectively.

The dual will feature two returning NCAA D-I National Champions in ASU’s 174-pounder Zahid Valencia and SDSU’s returning 133-pound senior Seth Gross. Gross was a finalist for the Dan Hodge award last season- awarded to the best college wrestler in the nation.

Both wrestlers are currently ranked No. 1 in the country in the FloWrestling national rankings.
