ASU Women’s Hockey: Devils head into weekend series against Boulder with chip on shoulders

There is nothing like the feeling of proving someone wrong. Whether that be in an argument, on a math test or even on the ice. This weekend serves as a golden opportunity for the Arizona State women’s club hockey team to do just that.

This weekend’s matchup against the 1-0 University of Colorado-Boulder Buffalos gives the Sun Devils the chance to prove to the entire ACHA how much just a single year of hockey experience can make such a huge difference.

Last year, CU was the first team ASU played in the history of their club. The inexperience showed, as Colorado would go on to sweep the weekend series with a combined score of 15-2.

This year, ASU looks to show a different side to the Buffaloes  a composed, disciplined side.

Fresh off of an off-week and a 4-1 victory over Grand Canyon University, the girls look to continue their momentum and notch their second victory of the season and match their win total last year.

Captain KC McGinley heads into the weekend series with a team-leading two goals and a team-tying two assists. When asked about what to expect for the upcoming series, McGinley said, “We definitely have something to prove this year. They’re going to think that we’re the same team but we’re definitely not. It’s going to be a good show, for sure.”

On the other side, Boulder looks to continue its own dominant streak. Coming off of an 11-0 win over the same GCU team that ASU played, the Sun Devils will have their work cut out for them.

Specifically, ASU will have to focus heavily on stopping Kathleen Ash, who netted a double hat-trick against GCU and scored a total of 33 points last season.

“We’ve been through so much as a team,” said ASU head coach Lindsey Ellis. “We know what we need to do to keep up with them this year.”

Both games have a slated puck drop at 10:10 p.m. at Oceanside Ice Arena, tonight and tomorrow, following the conclusion of the NCAA men’s games.
