This past weekend the ASU Women’s Golf team that is ranked No. 25 nationally by golfweek.com headed to Petaluma, CA to participate in the Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Condoleezza Rice. The Intercollegiate matchup was held at Stanford University’s beautiful golf course and it was a beautiful weekend for golf, the temperature was a high of 72 degrees setting the stage for every athlete participating to perform to the best of their abilities.

The Sun Devils kicked the tournament off with some excellent performances. The best score from the first day of play was redshirt freshman Patience Rhodes who scored an impressive 1-under. While others also produced with junior Grace Summerhays scoring 1-over through the first 18 and sophomore Paula Schulz-Hannsen scoring 2-over. To cap off round one senior Ashley Menne and junior Calynne Rosholt scoring four and three-over respectively. It was a good start to the weekend for the team but competing against National Championship contenders such as Stanford and Texas, they were going to need more going into the next two days of play.

Day two began with an incredible 18 from Menne who scored 67 leaving her with a score of 4-under for the day. She scored birdie on an amazing six of the 18 holes and if it hadn’t been for a double bogey on hole 10 her score could have been that much better. Outside of Menne there were a few more productive performances with Rosholt scoring even and Summerhays shooting 1-over. While Rhodes and Schulz-Hannsen had the highest scores on the day with Schulz-Hannsen hitting 4-over and Rhodes 5-over. However, despite those high scores the Devil’s had another productive day finishing just 5-over as a team.

As the final day began the Devil’s had a lot to prove as they were hoping to cement their names as a contender for a possible national championship in the spring. While they weren’t able to secure a top-five finish they did place seventh finishing with a score of 9-over on the final day. Despite not placing top-five, round three had some impressive performances with Rhodes scoring -2 redeeming herself after her 5-over score the day earlier. Menne and Shulz-Hannsen also performed well, hitting 1-over and Rosholt contributing with 3-over. Unfortunately the reason for the high score was due to a round to forget by Summerhays as she scored 6-over which was the worst score by any Devil of the weekend.

The final scores for the Women were Menne 1-over, Rhodes 2-over, Shulz-Hannsen at 7-over, Rosholt 6-over, and Summerhays 9-over. It was overall a good tournament overall for the girls; they scored +9 through three days three strokes short of a top five finish. It was a weekend with its fair shares of ups and downs but overall a good ending to ASU women’s golf fall season. Their next matchup will come Jan. 22 as they will ramp up their play and prepare for an exciting finish for these National Championship hopeful Sun Devils.
