ASU Women’s Basketball: Sun Devils Take Care of Business Against Ducks

(Photo: Brooke Faber/WCSN)

Oregon was seven points away from giving Arizona State their third loss in a row, but then ASU went on a 11-2 run late in the second, leading to their 72-52 victory.

Promise Amukamara lead the way in scoring on the night for the Sun Devils, tallying 16 points in all, with Katie Hempen right behind her at 13. Arizona State as a whole spread around the points, with seven players scoring more than six points, and three players hitting triple digits.

Oregon had some success on offense as well, with Jillian Alleyne going 8-8 from the field and scoring 19 points on the night, including three free throws. Lexi Peterson also got going late in this game, scoring 12 points on the night, eight coming in the second half.

Player of the Game: Sophie Brunner
While she may have only had eight points, Sophie Brunner had an impressive stat sheet, grabbing 10 rebounds, three assists and one steal. Even though she ended then night in a bit of foul trouble, Brunner was a presence in the paint tonight for the Sun Devils. This may not have been one of Brunner’s best games, seeing the year she has been having, but Brunner is one of those players whose impact isn’t fully reliant on points, but on how she can step in and shut down a player or zone. Brunner’s defense has been excellent this season, and that continued tonight against the Ducks.

Stat of the Game: 44% to 8%
The Sun Devils finished this game with a 44% shooting percentage from beyond the arc, which is pretty good on any given night, what was even better is that they held the Ducks to only 8%. Oregon was 1-12 on the night for three pointers, while ASU was 7-16. There were times in this game where the Sun Devils’ defense was on the weaker side, especially in the paint, but throughout the whole game the Sun Devils were able to shut down shots around the arc.

What’s Next:
Arizona State has a five day break in between games until they take a two game road trip to California. First off is at UCLA on Friday, tipoff at 8:00 p.m. MST.
