ASU Women’s Basketball: Sun Devils look to close out non-conference slate with win

Arizona State women’s basketball is 8-2 and will go for its seventh win in a row, as they host Holy Cross at home to concluded its non-conference slate of games.

If the Sun Devils defeat Holy Cross it will be their 40th non-conference win in the last four seasons. ASU women’s basketball is a perfect 5-0 at Well Fargo Arena.

The two teams have met two times previously, and ASU has been victorious in each.

The Sun Devils are riding a six-game winning streak, while two of those wins have come against top-25 ranked opponents. ASU is shooting 49 percent from the field, dominating the boards with a +11.7 margin and sharing the ball well with a +6.7 margin in assist per game.

The Sun Devils have been stingy when it comes to giving up three-pointers, they have the top-ranked three-point percentage defense in the country at 21.5 percent.

Last time out, the Sun Devils were victorious, beating Oral Roberts 79-52. ASU continued to score by committee, as four players scored in double digits and the team shot 50 percent from the floor. Also, the program had huge production from the bench, out scoring their opponent 34-16.

Senior Sophie Brunner will be leading the offensive charge. Through this six-game winning streak, Brunner has been shooting 60 percent from the floor and averaging 13.2 point per contest. Senior center Quinn Dornstauder is also playing well, shooting a red-hot 61 percent from the field and averaging 10.8 points per game. The two experienced frontcourt players are collectively averaging 24.0 points per game and shooting 63.5 percent from the hardwood.

Brunner is also pulling down 6.8 rebound per game, Kelsey Moos is averaging 6.2 rebound per game and Dornstauder is contributing by grabbing 4.3 rebounds per game, through the six-game winning streak.

Holy Cross is currently 2-8 overall and winless when they are away from home.

The Crusaders two victories this season are against Marist college and UMass Lowell.

Last time out, Holly Cross was defatted 69-66 by UMass. The Crusaders had four players reach double digits in scoring but untimely lost a late lead.

Holly Cross is lead offensively by junior guard Infiniti Thomas-Waheed, who averages 14.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per contest. Freshman forward Lauren Manis also contributes solid offensively, as she scores 11.8 points per game. The freshman forward is also active on the boards, pulling down 8.1 rebounds per game.

The Crusaders average 58 points per game on 36 percent shooting. The program struggles from beyond the arc, only shooting 29 percent.
