Arizona State Women’s Basketball announced Wednesday that it will forfeit its next two games against No. 8 Utah on Jan. 13 and Colorado due to a lack of healthy players.
“We came to the conclusion after meeting with our doctors and medical staff we will not be making the trip to Utah and Colorado this weekend,” head coach Natasha Adair said in a press release. “We understand the games will be forfeited, but the reality is there was no decision to be made. With few healthy scholarship players time to heal is our only option. Our plan is to get our team healthy over the course of this week and be ready when we host Arizona Jan. 22.”
ASU Vice President for University Athletics Ray Anderson also commented on behalf of the program.
“We feel terribly for our team that wants to compete, but due to the medical circumstances we are not able to,” Anderson said. “Admittedly this is a very unusual situation, one that requires us keeping the health of both injured and healthy players as the main focus.”
The announcement comes as the Sun Devils have fallen to last place in the Pac-12 Conference with a 1-10 record in their last 11 games after beginning the season 6-1. ASU will look to break a five-game losing streak against Arizona – who the Sun Devils lost to 84-66 on Dec. 29 – when it resumes play on Jan. 22.
