ASU Women’s Basketball: Sun Devils face off against FSU in rematch of Sweet 16

Monday marks the fifth matchup between the No. 22 Arizona State Sun Devils (7-3) and No.10 Florida Sate Seminoles (9-2) women’s basketball teams.

ASU will be looking for revenge, as the last time these two teams met was when Florida State won 66-65 in the 2015 Sweet 16.

At half time the Sun Devils trailed 33-22, however, they would not throw in the towel early. They came roaring back in the second half. The game was extremely close up until the end.

As the game clock was winding down ASU guard Peace Amukamara brought the ball up the court and approached the 3-point line for a last-chance shot. Florida State’s Maegan Conwright deflected the ball out of Amukamara’s hands. As the clock expired so did the Sun Devils hopes of advancing to the Elite Eight for the third time in school history. Even behind guard Katie Hempen’s 22-point performance and Sophie Brunner’s eight points and 11 rebounds Florida State proved to be too much for the Sun Devils.

Both ASU and Florida State lost guards coming into the season: Maegan Conwright for Florida State and Promise Amukamara for the Sun Devils. FSU is a strong rebounding team with five players on the roster over 6 feet and no one shorter than 5’7”.

The Sun Devils are coming off of a strong win over Marquette at home, scoring a season high 90 points led by Arnecia Hawkins who racked up 17.

ASU’s X-factor in the game may be their freshman. If they step up, ASU head coach Charli Turner Thorne can utilize her depth off of the bench.
