Promise Amukamara’s next destination is just a few light rail stops away.
Thursday night Amukamara was selected in the WNBA Draft by the defending champion Phoenix Mercury with the 36th overall pick, keeping her in the Grand Canyon State for at least a little longer.
Amukamara went to high school in the Phoenix Area, and then spent all four years of her collegiate career at Arizona State. In her senior year, Amukamara put up 10.9 points per game, with a 47.2% field goal percentage.
What Amukamara is really known for is her defense though, and if she can make the roster, that’s how Amukamara will help the Mercury.
Throughout the season Amukamara was tasked with shutting down an open’s best perimeter player and she often succeeded. Cal’s Brittany Boyd, who was drafted with the ninth overall pick by the New York Liberty, being a notable example.
In reaction to Amukamara being drafted, current ASU guard Katie Hempen posted on Instagram, “Huge SHOUTOUT to [Promise Amukamara]!!! Hard work pays off! Show’em what you got!”
Promise Amukamara’s sister, Peace, will return for ASU next season as a senior.
