ASU Women’s Basketball: More game postponements as Pac-12 tournament looms

Arizona State women’s basketball postponed their game against Oregon State on Sunday. The team already postponed Friday’s game against No. 12 Oregon earlier this week. Both are postponed due to COVID-19 developments in the two programs.

The Pac-12 Conference has said they will work with all schools to find mutually agreeable dates to reschedule the games. Arizona State has now postponed seven games due to COVID-19 protocols this season.

The Sun Devils were slated to play both teams on the road. ASU was originally scheduled to host the first set of games in January. Those were also postponed due to COVID-19 developments within their own program.

ASU (8-6, 4-6) last played on Sunday, losing to USC 65-57 at the Galen Center. It was their third straight loss, the longest losing streak of the season so far. ASU started slow while USC shot 54 percent in the first half. Trojans guard  Endyia Rogers’ led all scorers with 30 points.

Arizona State head coach Charli Turner Thorne felt her players “looked scattered” before tip-off.

“I’ve been doing this a really long time. I don’t know that I’ve had a team that’s so consistent with the slow starts,” Turner Thorne said. “But I’ve also never had a team this young. They’re learning and growing together.”

The Sun Devils have already reached the minimum 13 regular-season game requirement to be eligible for the NCAA tournament. But, they are running out of time to make up missed games because the Pac-12 tournament is in early March.

The Pac-12 has some ideas to make up games: play games last week of the regular season, or allow teams to make up games at the conference tournament. All depends on if those games help conference teams qualify for an NCAA tournament bid.

The Sun Devils will play again on Friday, Feb. 12 against Washington at 5 p.m MST in Tempe.
