ASU water polo head coach Todd Clapper announced the signings of two new recruits for Sun Devils that he hopes will be key players for the program’s future.
The first player announced was Emily Sonny, a goalkeeper, from Arroyo Grande, California. Sonny was just named the 2015 CIF Division III southern section player of the year. This season, her high school won the Division III Southern Section championships and held a 22-6 regular season record.
“Emily seemed to fit,” Clapper said. “She is someone who is very raw and new at the position and she is already having a lot of success.”
Sonny won’t make an immediate impact with the team. She is coming into a squad that has a lot of depth at the goalie position. Clapper said she will most likely redshirt her first year so she can develop her skills.
“She is someone who will come in here and take a little bit of time,” Clapper said. “We think the sky is the limit for her after a little bit of training.”
The next recruit announced is defensive two-meter player Maia Borisoff. In the stat-book, Borisoff is near the top in every category. In her senior year, Borisoff recored 53 goals, 60 assists, 60 steals and 55 drawn exclusion fouls.
“We were looking for a center defender,” Clapper said “Maia came across and seems to fit in-terms of her size, athleticism and character values, and all those things were in line with what we were looking for.”
Borisoff’s playing experience could immediately make her an asset for ASU. Borisoff is a four-time junior Olympic silver medalist, and in 2014, she helped lead her team to a gold-medal winning performance.
“It is becoming more and more important for us to recruit people like the players we have right now,” Clapper said. “We want people that are hard-working, and have a good character.”
Both recruits bring a physical stature that is necessary to play in the NCAA. When the 2017 season starts, Borisoff and Sonny will be look to develop into key players for the Sun Devils.
