The Arizona State Sun Devils were swept by the No. 11 Washington Huskies 20-25, 21-25, 14-25 on Sunday afternoon.
Throughout the first set ASU struggled to stay in system. The Huskies took a 9-4 lead, which forced ASU to take a timeout to regroup. It managed to muster a small comeback and forced a Washington timeout at 12-14.
But, ASU would never lead in the set. Bringing it within one at 17-18 is as close as it would be. Washington ultimately won the set 25-20 on a kill by freshman middle blocker Avie Niece.
The second set was much more evenly matched with three lead changes and 10 ties.
The most notable sore spot for the Sun Devils was senior outside hitter Maya McClendon who recorded a career high in kills just two days before. She had four attack errors and only three kills in the second set.
The most efficient hitters for ASU were their middles: freshman Mmachi Nwoke, and junior Oluoma Okaro. Each hit over .400 after two sets.
ASU kept in it until junior outside hitter Courtney Schwan smashed a serve that drop hard on the Sun Devils side to put the Huskies up 20-16. It forced the Sun Devils to take a timeout and demolished the little momentum they had as the Huskies won the set 25-21.
The third set was dominated by the Huskies. They started it off by winning the first seven of eight points and never let that lead slip.
The entire match, the Huskies were led by junior outside hitter Tia Scambray who recorded a career high 20 kills, had a .567 hitting percentage and nailed two aces in the match.
The Sun Devils would end the match with eight service errors and no aces. Freshman outside hitter Ivana Jeremic recorded a team high 12 kills and sophomore setter Kylie Pickrell tallied 34 assists.
The Sun Devils return to Tempe and prepare to face No. 8 Stanford on Friday, Nov. 18 at Wells Fargo Arena.
