In day two of competition in Texas at the Art Adamson Invitational, Arizona State continued its record breaking performance. Senior swimmer Richard Bohus broke his own record by .11 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 46.00, which is the second school record of the weekend by ASU.
The Sun Devil men are in third place overall, after two days of competing with 620.5 points. The second-place team LSU, is 24 points in front of ASU, while the first place team, Texas A&M, is 30.5 points ahead.
The Sun Devil men had another solid performance today at the Mansfield Natatorium. ASU took first place in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 6:30.74, which was four seconds faster than any other team.
Freshman Cameron Craig also continued to make his name known when he touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle with 1:34.57. That time by Craig is well under the NCAA B qualifying standard. That race was dominated by ASU as Barkley Perry and Thomaz Martins grabbed fourth and sixth place.
Another top performer from the men’s side was junior Andrew Porter. In the 100-yard butterfly, Porter came in second with a 46.42, while his teammate Tadas Duskinas finished right behind him in third place. Porter also grabbed a podium spot in the 100-yard backstroke by placing third behind teammate Bohus.
The Sun Devils competed well in the 100-yard breaststroke, as the junior Christian Lorenz earned second place with a time of 53.24. Senior Thibaut Capitaine recorded a time of 54.61, earing fourth place.
On the women’s side, they struggled to place in top spots. Both relays finished in fourth place and no one was able to qualify in the top-eight for the breastroke event. However, the success from the Lady Devils comes not in rankings, but in individual performances. Senior team captain Kat Simonvic swam her best time of the season in the 200-yard freestyle as she placed third with 1:45.23.
All the action will conclude tomorrow, with six final events, including the 400-yard freestyle relay. The men will look to close gap on first place in the overall standings, while the women look to continue improving their times.
