ASU Soccer: Taming the Trees

Desperate for a late season victory, the Arizona State women’s soccer will look to put an end to its five game losing streak against the Stanford Cardinal on Sunday.

The Sun Devils have suffered through a stretch in which they’ve failed to get on the board in the span of their last four games. Their last goal came in a win against Washington on October 6.

ASU will once again more than likely be without junior forward Jazmarie Mader and junior forward Ali Moon.

“When all of them are out it’s been really tough for us to get chances,” head coach Boyd said. “We’re still not sticking the ball in the net and we’re an underdog because of that more than anything else.”

Knocking off Stanford, however, might be an insurmountable task.

“They’re like the Barcelona of women’s soccer,” Boyd said. “They keep the ball for 500 chances and it’s a little bit demoralizing. It’s why they’re so highly ranked and doing so well in the Pac.”

The Cardinal come into Sunday’s match ranked first in RPI and third in the NCAA coaches’ poll, only finding themselves on the losing end of a match once all year.

“They’re very patient and they’re good in every position,” Boyd said. “They’ve got [Andi] Sullivan, who I think is the best player in the league. They’re sensational and fun to watch, except when you’re playing against them.”

Stanford is led by junior midfielder Andi Sullivan and senior keeper Jane Campbell, both being players called up to the US Women’s National Team.

In 15 game Sullivan has posted a line highlighting eight goals as well as six assists.

Campbell comes in having accounted for four shut-outs, only giving up 11 goals in 15 games.

The game will kickoff at 3:00 p.m. at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium in Tempe. The game can also be watched on Pac-12 Network.
