ASU Soccer: Sun Devils muster up tie against Oregon

It was a somber night for the No. 18 Arizona State Sun Devils as they tied 1-1 against unranked Oregon.

“We were bland. I thought we were bland in our warm up. We tried to shake ‘em loose in the locker room before the game. We thought we got it. Apparently we didn’t,” head coach Kevin Boyd said.

Just three minutes into the game Cali Farquharson was injured while fighting for a ball and had to be treated off of the field.

The Sun Devils looked sluggish for the remainder of the first half, but managed to allow only five shots, of which only two were on goal.

Farquharson later said that the injury was something that definitely took a toll on her game during the first half.

The second half started off in a similar manner, with the Sun Devils picking up some pace, but not all too much.

In addition, the referees made a series of controversial calls, including a handball call inside the box against ASU during the 70th minute. That led to a penalty kick, which resulted in an Oregon goal.

It was that goal that seemed to finally wake up the Sun Devils.

Just 16 minutes later Brianna Gonzales connected a cross with Aly Moon who put it past the goalie, making it 1-1.

Aly Moon now has eight goals this season, just one away from tying Farquharson for most goals this season.

Regulation time ended with the scoreboard still even, and the game went into overtime.

Once again, ASU seemed tired and Oregon took advantage of it. At the end of overtime the Ducks had outshot the Sun Devils 5-3 and created many more very dangerous plays.

Even so, none of the Oregon shots were nearly as dangerous as Aly Moon’s, who chipped the keeper from the top of the box, barely missing left with less than 30 seconds until the final whistle.

ASU plays again on Sunday against Oregon State at home.
