ASU Soccer: Sun Devils look to get back in a groove after losing three straight

The once No. 18 ranked Arizona State Women’s soccer team is now ranked 95th in the country after three straight losses.

Before the loss streak started, the Sun Devils had not conceded a goal this season. Arizona State had also racked up a total of 16 goals in four games.

Since then, they have conceded six goals within three games.

One of the problems may be that the Sun Devils were without last year’s leading goal scorer, senior Cali Farquharson, for the last game and most of the second half of the game before.

Against the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, Arizona State went into halftime with a 2-1 lead following goals from Farquharson and redshirt junior Lucy Lara. However, Farquharson only played two minutes of the second half and after a hard fought battle, the Sun Devils went on to lose 3-2.

In addition to that, Farquharson did not play in the 2-0 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners.

Nevertheless, Farquharson’s absence is not the only problem the Sun Devils have had to face the past three games. Arizona State head coach Kevin Boyd said the players felt that they were their own worst enemy.

“Most of the problems, we we’re creating, and it’s just not like us,” Boyd said.

As a result, practice this last week has been committed to finding the outstanding form that they had at the beginning of the season.

“We’re going back to basics right now,” Boyd said. “We’re going back to pre-season, and doing stuff we did then to try and get us to the place where we were real focused and disciplined.”

The Sun Devils will look to end their losing streak this Sunday in Tempe at 11 A.M. PST against Washington State. This will be Arizona State’s first conference game and will be broadcasted on Pac-12 Networks.
