The Arizona State Sun Devils hired Graham Winkworth as their new women’s soccer head coach, filling the void left by the resignation of Kevin Boyd.
Winkworth spent the last four seasons as head coach of South Alabama, and went 66-18-7 in his time there.
“I first would like to thank President Crow for providing me the opportunity to work at this prestigious University,” Winkworth said. “I would also like to thank Mr. Anderson for showing the faith in me to lead the soccer program and belief in the goals we have set for the future of the program.”
The newly hired head coach will look to turn the team around, as its 6-11-2 regular season record and 1-9-1 mark in conference play was its worst finish in ten seasons under coach Boyd.
“I was impressed with Graham’s skill at building and elevating programs everywhere he has coached,” said Athletic Director Ray Anderson. “He has a proven track record of results at every level of the sport and we are excited to bring someone with his degree of skill and expertise into the competitive Pac-12 Conference.”
Winkworth, 38, who hails from England, intends to bring in international talent in future recruiting classes as part of his plan to turn around ASU.
“I like to throw a few (internationals) into the squad if possible if they’ve played at the highest level,” Winkworth said. “They’re brought up breathing soccer constantly and bring a different level of professionalism I like.”
Winkworth, who led South Alabama to the Sun Belt Conference title and an NCAA tournament appearance in each of his four seasons there, will look to bring the Sun Devils back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2014.
