The Arizona State Sun Devils took down the Oregon State Beavers late Friday in a 3-0 victory in Tempe.
With this shut out, goalkeeper Chandler Morris set the record for the most clean sheets in ASU history.
“It was always a dream to play Pac-12 soccer and dream true to be able to come [to ASU],” Morris said. “I honestly just wanted to play my part so I’m glad I was able to contribute while I was here.”
Not only was Morris happy with the record but head coach Kevin Boyd said he’s proud of her accomplishment.
“Were obviously thrilled for her she’s earned it and spent a lot of time in our net,” Boyd said. “We would’ve preferred for her to get it earlier in the season but were excited she got it.”
In the first half, The Sun Devils not only dominated possession of the ball but put outshot the Beavers 4-2.
At the 14th minute, sophomore forward Jessica Raybe, gave the Sun Devils an early lead as a ball from redshirt senior Mackenzie Semerad, was played into the box intended for Raybe. Geist failed to collect the ball while off her line, giving Raybe an open net to score in.
“I remember that [Semerad] was playing it to me and it was a little far out and I just kept running for it,” Raybe said. “The goalie kind of bobbled it and I finished from there…Probably one of the easiest goals I’ll get here.”
In the 30th minute, junior forward Larisa Staub came on for Raybe and immediately made an impact. She logged eight minutes of action before getting on the scoresheet herself. After receiving a ball from freshman midfielder Adriana Orozco, Staub said she “saw that the left side was open” and then drilled a low driven shot into the bottom left corner of the OSU net from outside the box.
“I worked hard to get the ball back… that I lost,” Staub laughed. “I shot it and luckily scored.”
The final goal of the match came in the 89th minute as redshirt junior midfielder Lucy Lara had the ball fall to her feet after sophomore forward Jazmarie Mader’s shot was saved. Lara easily slotted it home putting the Sun Devils up 3-0 with one minute left in the game.
With the offense putting on a good performance, the defense also stepped up this game. Although senior defender Mackenzie Berryhill played in the midfield this game, the defense still put on a solid display limiting OSU to just three shots on target.
The only real threat that came at ASU’s net was when sophomore forward Nikki Faris fired a shot from outside the box to which senior goalkeeper Chandler Morris made a great diving save to protect the shut out.
This win improves the Sun Devils record 6-7-1 (2-4-1 Pac-12) and they hope to continue their winning ways as they take on Oregon this Sunday at 11 a.m. PST in Tempe for the final home game of the season.
