ASU Soccer: Sun Devils and Utes fight the full 110 minutes

The Sun Devils snapped their five game losing streak against the Utah Utes this Sunday afternoon, but not with the outcome they expected. The match ended with a 2-2 draw after a physical, opportunistic, 110 minute match.

The match was fairly even throughout. The first goal came in the 13th minute from ASU leading scorer Jemma Purfield in the form of a penalty kick. Junior forward Natalie Stephens was the one fouled in the box as she tried to look for an ASU player making a run to pass it to.

Purfield also scored her second goal and her second penalty of the match in the second half to tie the game 2-2 and send it into overtime, as defender Olive Jones was fouled in the box while trying to keep possession.

Defenders Olive Jones and Angela Boyle were two highlights in today’s match. Both got involved in the attack at the right times and used their strength and aggressiveness to win balls and including a game saving tackle by Boyle with only four minutes left in double overtime.

In between Jemma Purfield’s two penalty kicks, Utah midfielder, Paola van der Veen, scored two goals of her own, including another penalty to give her team the lead in the 48th minute.

The foul was a careless and unnecessary one by Sun Devil defender Taylor Coon, who tripped up the Utah forward as she had her back to the goal.

The match was a overall a physical one as three of the goals in today’s match came from penalties and there were 38 fouls in total.

ASU will head back home next week to play Washington State and Washington before playing their final game of the season against Arizona in Tucson.
