The Arizona State women’s soccer team ended their final home game of the season on a high note, as they emerged victorious 1-0 over the Washington Huskies in Sunday’s matchup.
Seniors Megan Delaney, Taylor Coon, Keeley Gormley, Madison Kmetko, Jazmarie Mader, Ashley March, Jessica Raybe and Madison Stark left it all out on their home field for their final moments on Sun Devil turf. Student coach and former player Aly Moon was also honored at the team’s Senior Day.
With quite a number of graduating seniors on Coach Winkworth’s squad, fans saw a varied lineup this afternoon as six seniors took a starting position. Winkworth also ensured that every senior saw playing time throughout the 90 minutes of play as a way to honor their hard work.
“Today’s all about the seniors and I’m really happy for them,” said Winkworth. Past coaches have played all the seniors during Senior Day, and although there is generally a lot on the line at the end of the season, Winkworth wanted to continue this inclusive tradition.
“I’m so glad [Winkworth] stuck with that tradition today,” added senior defender Madison Stark. “It shows that we are really cared about and meant a lot, not only to the seniors, but to all the parents.”
Though mostly a defensive game on the Sun Devil’s end, a rocket goal from forward Christina Edwards came late in the second half to secure a win for the seniors.
“I’m glad I could score for the seniors,” said Edwards after the match. “You could tell in [the seniors’] playing that they just wanted it, and that’s the most contagious thing.”
Not only happy that she was able to find the back of the net, Edwards played her heart out for the nine seniors who only have one game left, as did the rest of her teammates.
“It’s like they’re your parents. You want to make them proud,” said Edwards.
Although the Sun Devils still have one game left, many of the seniors were reminiscent of their four years together. “I wouldn’t have wanted any other group out here with me today,” said Stark. “I’ve had the most amazing time, and it’s so bittersweet leaving.”
Student coach and senior Aly Moon was also able to reflect on her years with the Sun Devils, both on and off the field. “This team is my family,” said Moon with a huge grin.
Delighted as ASU is about their victory over the Huskies, their celebrations are short-lived as the Sun Devils prepare to take on all-time rivals, the University of Arizona Wildcats.
“It’s so much more than just a soccer game. It’s a rivalry,” said Stark. Teammates Edwards and Moon expressed similar sentiment towards the Wildcats, as they hope to go out on a good note.
The Sun Devils will finish off their 2017 season in possibly their biggest match this season, where they take on the Wildcats in the Territorial Cup. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday.
