The Arizona State women’s soccer team traveled to the northwestern to take on the University of Oregon in Eugene Friday afternoon.
Oregon had lost all five of its Pac-12 conference games this season until this Friday the 13, as the Sun Devils fell 3-0 to the Ducks.
The starting lineup looked a tad bit different for ASU. Center back, Angela Boyle was ineligible for the Sun Devils after receiving a red card against USC on Sunday.
Rules state that a player receiving a red card must sit out for one match.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Megan Delaney made her second start in a row since Nikki Panas has been absent from head coach Graham Winkworth’s lineup. Delaney came in midway through the UCLA game for Panas.
On the other side of the field, Oregon’s Brianne Parsons was absent from today’s game. Her home was lost in Santa Rosa due to the California fires. However, on the field she was not absent.
Senior defender Mia Costa represented her longtime friend by wearing Parsons’ jersey in the match.
Scoring began in the first three minutes for the Oregon Ducks. ASU broke down in the midfield which then carried into poor defending in the final third.
Forward Marissa Everett took advantage on the goal line and popped one in against Delaney.
The Ducks had a strong tempo during the first half. Since the Sun Devils pushed forward offensively, it left their back line vulnerable for Oregon’s offense. Oregon had nine shots during the first half.
Midway through the first half, Bayley Bruner sent a long ball down the side of the field to Nicole Seaman. Seaman then dribbled towards the net and crossed it over to Everett who tallied her second goal on the night.
Trailing 2-0 at the 26 minute of the game, the Devils didn’t back down. Christina Edwards, Oregon native, had multiple shots on net. The Devils put up seven shots during the first half.
ASU continued pressure throughout the rest of the first half, but was unable to put anything in the back of the net.
Going into the second half, both teams looked even unlike the first half with Oregon dominating most offensive play.
In the 61′ minute, the Ducks had an opportunity on a corner kick. The ball missed the net unable to add to their 2-0 lead.
The Ducks continued their offensive pressure against the Sun Devils backline. Forward Miranda Shulz had two opportunities in a row to score including a shot that went off the crossbar.
Third time was the charm for Shulz because in the 73 minute she scored her first goal of the season and third of her career.
ASU trailed the rest of the game and was unable to produce any offense to get a single goal on the scoreboard.
Oregon doubled the amount of shots in the second half, concluding the 3-0 win with 23 shots including 11 on goal. ASU tallied just 10 shots and only five of those were on net.
The Sun Devils will travel to Boulder, on October 19 to take on Colorado for their next Pac-12 game.
