Arizona State women’s soccer head coach Kevin Boyd resigned Monday.
Boyd’s resignation follows a season in which the Sun Devils endured a last place finish and went 1-9-1 in conference play, their only win in Pac-12 play coming at Washington.
ASU Vice President for Athletics Ray Anderson released a statement on the matter.
“I want to personally thank Kevin for his investment in graduating student-athletes and the achievements of the program during his tenure,” Anderson said. “We have high expectations for success at Arizona State, and we intend for our women’s soccer program to compete annually in the postseason, and eventually contend for both conference and national titles, all while creating an environment conducive to the academic success of our student-athletes. Arizona State will conduct a national search for a new head coach of our women’s soccer program that best fits our department, university and community.”
Boyd was at the helm of a depleted team this year due in part to the losses of junior forwards Aly Moon and Jazmarie Mader. The duo played sparingly while watching from the sideline as their teammates battled through a rigorous conference schedule.
Another factor of this resignation may date back to the 2015 season, which started with high expectations but ended in a disappointing 9-8-1 record and no trip to the NCAA tournament.
Prior to coaching at Arizona State, Boyd spent 10 years coaching at Cal Berkeley. Boyd had just concluded his 10th season with ASU, leading the Sun Devils to the NCAA tournament on four occasions. He departs Tempe as the all-time head coaching wins leader with a 90-85-23 overall record.
