Arizona State soccer (6-6-3, 0-4-2) fell to the Colorado Buffaloes (10-4-1, 2-3-1) 2-1 during their one-game road trip on Saturday afternoon at Prentup Field.
The Sun Devils fell behind to the Buffaloes early on in the first half with a goal from junior Gabbi Chapa in the second minute of the match. This would mark Chapa’s first goal of the season on her first shot on goal.
ASU’s best chance of the first half came from sophomore Marleen Schimmer when her shot bounced off the crossbar to keep the Buffaloes in the lead.
Throughout the rest of the first half, ASU continued to struggle to find the back of the net, something the Sun Devils have struggled with since beginning Pac-12 play.
At the start of the second half, they once again let their guard down to start off the next 45 minutes which resulted in a second Buffaloes goal by freshman Tessa Barton. The Colorado native has now found the back of the net five times this season and twice in conference play to place second in the team in goals.
Although being down by two goals, the Sun Devils continue to battle against the Buffaloes, which would eventually lead to freshman Dai Williams’ top right corner screamer. The freshman breezed through defenders to find the back of the net for ASU’s lone goal of the afternoon.
Freshman netminder, Giulia Cascapera allowed two goals and had a total of eight saves on 10 shots on goal. This brings her season total save percentage to .757. This is the fourth Pac-12 match in which the Los Angeles Native has given up more than two goals.
Despite these statistics, she has also had an impressive highlight reel of saves that receive praise from people around the conference.
ASU’s overall record against CU after the 2-1 loss is now 4-4-2 with both teams finishing in a 1-1 draw during 2018 conference play.
Without a win in conference play so far, the Sun Devils sit near the bottom of the standings in Pac-12 play with two points, with only Oregon below them. An Oregon team that they are slated to play in their last home match of the season.
The Sun Devils will make their way back to Tempe for their last homestand of the season in which they will take on Oregon State on Thursday at 5 p.m. MST before their senior night the following Sunday against Oregon for a 12 p.m. kick-off.
