For the first time since 2009, Northern Arizona University has worked its way into the NCAA College Cup.
The Lumberjacks ended their season with a 12-5-4 record overall. These 12 wins tie this team with the 2010 and 2008 NAU squads for most team wins in a season.
This record setting group of young ladies also held a 7-2-3 record in conference. NAU is part of the Big Sky Conference which includes teams such as Montana, Idaho State, Weber State. Northern Arizona finished its season third in conference and then won three straight games in the Big Sky Championships to take home the title and secure a spot in the NCAA tournament.
The Lumberjacks fell into fifth in standings for goals scored in the Big Sky. Northern Arizona placed first in a significantly less exciting category: offside calls.
Northern Arizona’s star forward, Haley Wingender finished first in game winning goals for the conference. The 5-foot-7 junior also finished second in individual points and fourth in shots taken.
NAU is currently on a season-high winning streak of five games. They will be looking to use this momentum to carry them through against their in-state rival in opening round of the NCAA College Cup.
Kick off for the game is Saturday at 7 p.m. at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. The two teams faced each other early this preseason and ASU defeated NAU 4-1.
