Coming off a down-to-the-wire season-opening win at the Sahalee Players Invitational, No. 6 Arizona State’s men’s golf takes a trip to the mountains of Coalville, Utah, for the Wohali Classic at the Wohali Club, which starts Monday. The Wohali, hosted by Utah, is a brand-new event making its debut in 2025.
Although the trip up north will be an away match for most of the team, freshmen Boston Bracken and Bowen Mauss are both returning to their home state. Bracken and Mauss both played all three rounds last week at the Sahalee Players Invitation and are slated to play all three days again in Utah.
Bracken finished at 11-over-par (75/73/79), contributing to the team’s score two out of the three days in Washington. Mauss shot four-over-par (78/66/76) for the three-day tournament, including an impressive bogey-free, six-under-par round on the second day.
Additionally, senior Michael Mjaaseth will look to keep his foot on the gas following his one-under-par, fourth-place finish last week in Washington. The Norwegian tapped in a birdie on the 56th and final hole of the tournament to give the Sun Devils the win. He will look to lead them to victory again and keep his hot hand in Utah.
The tournament will take place Sept. 16-17, playing two rounds on Monday and the final round on Tuesday. They will face off against a competitive field consisting of three top 25 teams in the GCAA Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll: No. 13 BYU, No. 24 UCLA and No. 25 San Diego State.
No. 13 BYU won’t have to travel far for its opening tournament of the year. The Cougars squad features senior Zac Jones, who is ranked No. 76 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and an All-Big 12 team Honoree, and Utah native, sophomore Peter Kim. BYU also features freshman Jackson Mauss, brother to ASU’s Bowen Mauss. The two siblings will compete against each other in a college setting for the first time.
Senior Kyle An and junior Alex Papayoanou led the way for No. 24 UCLA last week. The Bruins are also coming off a solid performance at the Sahalee Players Invitational, where they placed third and will look to improve upon their opening campaign.
No. 25 San Diego State also had a strong start to its fall season, finishing just behind UCLA in fifth place in Washington. Sophomore Harry Takis had an impressive outing, finishing second for the tournament following a final round 67. Takis was the Mountain West Freshman of the Year in his first season as an Aztec and is off to a blazing start heading into his second tournament of his sophomore year.
Mjaaseth and the two Utah natives will look to help Arizona State overcome the challenging field in Utah. The Sun Devils will look to ride their early-season surge as they search for their first season-opening, back-to-back wins since the 2019-2020 season.
