ASU MBB: Sun Devils overpowered by Buffalo in Round of 64

Coming off Bobby Hurley’s first tournament win in Bobby Hurley’s coaching career, and the first tournament win for the Sun Devils in a decade, the team couldn’t continue its tournament run as it fell to Buffalo 91-74.

“I’m super proud of my guys and the effort and season they had,” Hurley said after the game.

From the jump, the Sun Devils couldn’t match the hot three-point shooting of the Bulls. ASU shot 3-22 from three compared to Buffalo’s 10-27.

The Sun Devils didn’t hit a three until the second half, when Kimani Lawrence one to give ASU some life.

However, the Bulls seemed to have an answer for everything ASU did. Buffalo senior guard Jeremy Harris and Nick Perkins both finished with 21 points for Buffalo, while CJ Massinburg tallied 18 points on 6-11 shooting.

In his last game as a Sun Devil, senior Zylan Cheatham led the Sun Devils with 22 points on 8-12 shooting.

Hurley described his senior forwards legacy as “immeasureable.”

Remy Martin, injured in ASU’s game against Oregon in the Pac-12 Tournament said after the game he was less than 100 percent. He finished with six points on 2-8 shooting.

Not only were the Sun Devils outmatched from the perimeter, the were out-rebounded 42-26.

The win sends the Bulls into a matchup with No. 3 Texas Tech, while the loss sends the Sun Devils into an offseason of uncertainty when it comes to player personnel. Cheatham will be leaving ASU, as will DeQuon Lake, but perhaps the biggest question mark is Dort and his status for next season.

The freshman earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors and could very well declare for the draft.
