The No. 8 ASU men’s club lacrosse team defeated No. 20 San Diego State 14-8 on Saturday, March 25, 2017.
Freshman midfielder Brandon Rogers notched a hat trick in what was a strong offensive showing for ASU.
Junior midfielder Tommy Carrasco got things started off for the Sun Devils, finishing a goal after a faceoff win by sophomore face off specialist Trevor Driscoll.
SDSU scored two consecutive goals to tie it up at 2-2 early in the first quarter.
Junior attackman Montana Giffen got his name in the score book after a nice assist by Carrasco, but San Diego State quickly answered with a goal of its own.
The first quarter ended at a 4-4 tie, in part due to a series of great saves by sophomore goalie Johnny Perlite.
ASU started the first 58 seconds of the second quarter a man down, but it had no impact on the ASU defense as Perlite continued to be a brick wall in front of the net for the Sun Devils.
The defense for ASU held strong in the second quarter, allowing zero goals and ASU took a 7-4 lead into halftime.
Carrasco scored two of the next three goals for ASU, giving the Sun Devils a 10-5 lead coming out of the break.
SDSU freshman midfielder Patrick Greene snuck a goal past the Sun Devils, bringing the Aztecs to a 10-6 deficit.
ASU sophomore midfielder Ben Parietti responded back with a goal of his own, putting the Aztecs in an 11-6 hole.
Greene drove in one more goal for SDSU, but the offensive onslaught continued for the Sun Devils as Rodgers and Junior midfielder Kyle McAllister scored two goals for ASU to cap off the 14-8 victory.
The Sun Devils have won their last five games and are a perfect 4-0 on this road trip.
Their next task will not be easy, however, as they return to the valley to take on at No. 3 GCU. That game will be played at GCU on Friday, March 31 at 7 p.m.
