ASU Lacrosse: No. 9 Arizona State had its season ended by No. 1 Chapman

No. 9 Arizona State’s tournament run ended today with a 16-8 loss to undefeated No. 1 Chapman in Irvine, CA.

After coming off a one-point upset victory against No. 8 Colorado State yesterday, ASU looked to continue the momentum. Chapman had other plans.

The offense of the Panthers proved too much for the Sun Devils as the undefeated team stayed perfect.

It would be déjà vu from when these two teams met last time as Arizona State gave up seven goals in the first quarter. Panther attackmen Wesley Greason, junior, and Dylan Garner, sophomore, both scored two goals in the first quarter. The Sun Devils did score two in the quarter but it was Chapman who had the 7-2 advantage after time expired.

The second quarter was a different story for Arizona State. Junior goaltender Chris Roufanis came into the game in place of freshman Johnny Perlite.

Perlite appeared to be injured after a late save in the first quarter. The Sun Devil defense stepped up big creating two turnovers off of Chapman’s first two possessions. Perlite would then come back in after five minutes passed.

Senior midfielder Adam Beauchamp would be the first to score in the second quarter off a sidearm snipe less than five minutes in, cutting the deficit to 7-3. Freshman attackman Jake Marthens would answer right back less than two minutes after Beauchamp’s goal off a breakaway feed from senior attackman Finn Wells to make it 7-4.

Just over two minutes after a Chapman score, Wells would score a man up goal giving him his 20th goal of the season, making the score 8-5. At halftime, 13 goals were scored between the two teams.

ASU would strike first in the second half, as Wells would get his second goal off the game off a sidearm skipper from the point to make it 8-6 Chapman. But less than a minute after Wells’ goal, Chapman would get a few of their own.

Garner scored two goals in a row for the Panthers, and he tallied six goals in the game.

Last time they faced each other, Garner also had six goals against the Sun Devils, his highest scoring game this season.

After a late goal from senior attackman Rhett Rodgers, Arizona State would head in to the fourth quarter with a score of 13-8 in favor of Chapman.

Sophomore midfielder Blake Lee scored back to back goals for the Panthers in the fourth quarter to give them the 15-8 advantage. ASU was held scoreless in the fourth quarter, something that hasn’t happened since they faced BYU back in March this season.

After a late penalty call on the Sun Devils, the Panthers just ran down the clock to collect their second round win. They advance to the semi-finals and await the winner of the No. 5 BYU and No. 4 Georgia Institute of Technology matchup.

Player of the Game:

Dylan Garner- The sophomore attackman scored six goals in the game. That may be impressive, but he’s done it before. Garner also scored six goals yesterday against the Purdue Boilermakers and scored six the last time Chapman played Arizona State. It goes without saying that Garner is familiar with sock tricks this season.
