ASU Lacrosse: No. 9 Arizona State couldn’t handle No. 13 Boston College’s second half effort

No. 9 Arizona State fell to No. 13 Boston College 13-10 in a MCLA Monday afternoon match up.

Everything changed after halftime when Boston College opened up the second half with a 4-0 run, taking a two goal lead midway through third quarter.

However, at the start of the game it was back and forth.

Gerard Quinn, Lawson Pisani, and Michael Ward of Boston College each scored in the first. Junior attackman Rhett Rodgers kicked off the scoring for ASU with two goals. Senior midfielder Henry Archie added a goal of his own.

Senior midfielder Finn Wells came into the second quarter on fire, scoring three goals in two and a half minutes to give ASU a six to three lead.

Wells thought the team’s biggest problem was the lack of ball movement.

“We didn’t let the ball do the work and I think, in the end, that’s what got us,” Wells said.

Boston College responded with three goals midway through the second, one goal coming from junior defensive midfielder Michael Mikkelsen and the other two were courtesy of Sophomore attackman Kevin Sheridan.

Senior midfielder Adam Beauchamp responded by scoring two goals in a row to finish off the half with ASU up eight to six.

“What it really comes down to when you lose a game by a few goals is being able to run and clear as a team,” Beauchamp said. “Those few turnovers really changed the momentum and gave the other team a few more possessions.”

The Sun Devils were quiet in the third, only scoring one goal thanks to a desperation heave by Finn Wells.

By the fourth quarter, the momentum was all on Boston College’s side. The Eagles’ bench was electric and cheered their team on to a 13-10 upset.

ASU head coach Todd MacRobbie commented that their biggest problem was a lack of focus and turnovers, but that was not all.

“I think our execution, us not working hard on-and-off the ball consistently, led to a lot of goals,” MacRobbie said.

The Sun Devils have not lost a home game since 2013. After their loss to Boston College, they have now lost two in a row at the ASU West Campus.

ASU’s next game will be against Westminster College in Salt Lake City on Thursday, March 10th at 4:00 pm (MST).
