The No. 10 Arizona State men’s club lacrosse team defeated No. 9 Utah 14-11 Friday night.
Senior attackman Rhett Rodgers scored 5 goals and sophomore attackman Patrick Haviland racked up a hat trick. Both Rodgers and Haviland accounted for the first 5 ASU goals.
ASU dominated time of possession thanks to a strong outing in the faceoffs. Arizona State sophomore faceoff specialist Trevor Driscoll had a strong outing before leaving the game with injury. Junior midfielder Zac Mathien stepped in after Driscoll’s injury.
Rodgers started it off with a goal for ASU early in the first quarter. The Utes quickly responded with 2 goals to take a 2-1 lead with 3 minutes left in the first quarter.
Haviland kept things rolling and caught fire for 2 consecutive goals to give the Sun Devils a 3-2 lead. Rodgers found the back of the net for his second goal of the game as ASU ended the first quarter up 4-2.
The Utes fired back, as Utah freshman attackman Josh Stout put a goal in to cut the deficit to 4-3. Haviland scored his third goal of the game with 8 minutes left in the second quarter to give the Sun Devils a 5-3 lead. Rodgers then scored his third goal of the game to give ASU a 7-4 lead with two minutes left in the first half.
Sophomore attackman Jake Marthens snuck a goal in with just a second remaining in the half to give ASU a 9-6 lead at the end of half.
ASU came out of the third quarter with back-to-back goals from freshman midfielder Emerson Roth and sophomore midfielder Ben Parietti to take an 11-6 lead.
The Devils took a 12-9 lead into the fourth quarter, where Marthens tacked on another goal to make it 13-9 for ASU. Rodgers scored his fifth goal of the game with 4 minutes remaining in the game to give ASU a 14-10 advantage.
Stout put in another goal for the Utes with under a minute remaining, but it was too little too late as ASU advanced to 2-0 on their road trip and 4-3 on the season.
The loss marked Utah’s first loss of the season and head coach Brian Holman’s first loss since taking over the helm this year.
ASU travels to take on No. 18 UNLV Sunday, March 12.
