ASU Lacrosse: Carrasco’s career year has lifted Sun Devils this season

The Arizona State men’s club lacrosse team has a decent sized roster. Sometimes standout players who are making a true difference to the team can be overlooked by accident.

One player that does not get enough credit for his effort towards the team is junior midfielder Tommy Carrasco. This season Carrasco has scored 16 goals and has accumulated ten assists as well.

In his freshman year on the team he had 12 goals and received the 2015 Freshman of the Year Award from his coaches. In each year, he continues to climb the ladder of being a better player.

He did not realize he was one goal away from this great accomplishment before going to play San Diego State on March 25.

“That’s cool, I like getting assists too,” said Carrasco. “I would like to get more assists also but that’s good I feel like my shooting has improved since last year.”

Carrasco is a team player and wants to be able to set up his teammates instead of being selfish around the net.

“He always shares the ball,” said freshman midfielder Emerson Roth. “I think he always does smart things with the ball and he runs the offense.”

In his previous two seasons at ASU, Carrasco had a combined 27 assists.

Assistant coach Justin Straker added, “Carrasco is a real team player and he’s a great teammate for all the guys.”

Before coming to Arizona State, Carrasco attended Novato High School in Novato, California. He played three seasons with the hornets where he scored a total of 53 goals and had over 200 shots on net.

He has had a passion for lacrosse since fourth grade when he started playing the sport. His passion carried onto the ASU men’s club team in hopes of getting better every year.

Coming into this season Carrasco had some personal goals he was hoping to accomplish.

“Get more points than I got in the past and just try and improve the team and help command the offense and run the O (offense).” said Carrasco.

He has done exactly what he hoped for at the beginning of the season.

According to Straker, Carrasco is “a really coachable kid.”

Carrasco is a student of the W.P. Carey Business School at ASU as a business law major. In his free time, he hangs out with his friends from the lacrosse team.

“He’s a cool guy, laid back and mellow.” said Roth.

Carrasco and his teammates will take on their next opponent, no. 3 Grand Canyon University in Phoenix on Friday, March 31 at 7 p.m.
