ASU Lacrosse: After a big win, Arizona State falls to No. 6 Colorado State by one

No. 14 Arizona State split their Colorado road trip with a loss today to No. 6 Colorado State by a score of 7-6.

After coming off a huge win against No. 5 University of Colorado last night, the Sun Devils fell short by one goal in Fort Collins, CO. This was the third loss by one goal for ASU this season.

With four minutes into the third quarter, sophomore midfielder Tommy Carasco bounced in a goal to make the Sun Devils take the 3-2 advantage.

From there, the Rams would go on a tear. CSU would score three unanswered goals in about eight minutes.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Carasco scored once again to put the Sun Devils within one. The Colorado road trip proved to be a nice one for the midfielder as he racked four goals and two assists in the past two days. 

Arizona State would then tie the game with a goal from freshman attackman Jake Marthens but Colorado State would answer right back less than a minute later from team goal leader Colin Macdonald. Marthens would delver another goal to tie it 6-6.

Chase Warner would score his second of the game to get the Rams the lead 7-6 with less than three minutes to go.

Back at the start of the game, it was the Rams who would set the tone with an unassisted goal from junior midfielder Chase Warner. About two minutes later, Ram’s senior attackman Jake Johnson collected his 10th goal of the season making the score 2-0.

Turnovers played a major factor as both defenses were influential in getting the ball to their offense and crisping up the clear game.

After a timeout midway through the second quarter, ASU’s sophomore defensive midfielder Alex Rocha peppered in his first goal of the season to make the score 2-1. Less than a minute after Rocha’s goal, freshman attackman Patrick Haviland got a garbage goal near the crease to tie up the game. Before going to Colorado, Haviland was coming off a four goal game against UNLV last Saturday.

At the end of the first half, the score would remain tied at two. Both team’s defenses were stepping up big, as ASU and CSU combined for 12 turnovers just in the first half.

This was also the first time Colorado State had defeated Arizona State in three years. The last time they won was in a three goal game when Chris Malone was the head coach for ASU.

The next game for ASU will be against in state rivals, University of Arizona, on Saturday at 7:00 in Tucson.
