ASU Hockey: Rigors of two-week road trip too much for Devils to overcome, drop two to No. 10 Penn State

A two-week trip away from home was too much to overcome for the Sun Devils this weekend in Pennsylvania.

Arizona State dropped both of its games against No. 10 Penn State by a combined 15-4 – the team now boasts an overall record of 2-11-0.

As was the case last weekend, the Devils limited the penalties in both games, warranting just 11 penalties in both games. Still, the Nittany Lions capitalized on two of their 10 chances, while Arizona State couldn’t make the most of any of its five chances.

On Friday night, Greg Powers and the Sun Devils were down by just one goal heading into the third period after Jakob Stridsberg scored the team’s fourth goal of the night to make the count 5-4 in favor of Penn State.

As the game progressed, however, the now veteran experience of the second-youngest Division I NCAA program in the country started to show, as the sixth-year program netted two more insurance goals in the third period.

On Saturday night, the Devils were simply outmatched in the 8-0 loss.

Arizona State will return home for a two-game series with Rensselaer at Oceanside Ice Arena on Friday and Saturday.

Last season, Arizona State fell to RPI twice in New York as the Engineers dominated the first-year program, outscoring the Sun Devils 9-2 in that series.
